Kawasaki vulcan 1500 starting problems

I have a 2000 kawasaki vulcan 1500 classic that has a problem starting. I turn on the ignition switch and the spedometer lights up as well as the turn signal lights. I press the starter button and it does not turn over at all. If I keep pressing the button several times it may start eventually. Once it turns over it starts easy enough.

It's not the sidestand switch, if it won't start. It just won't run with sidestand "down" and in gear, with the clutch out. So here's the troubleshoot. First check the battery voltage. It should be 12.5 or more. Then check that the positive and negative connection are clean and tight on the battery.

Check the big 3, air, fuel and spark. When the issue happens again, see if the bike is getting spark. See if the bike is getting proper fuel pressure and fuel volume. Make sure there are no obstructions by the air filter. In general, broad brush stroke, I would imagine most would say FI has the nod. I'v had my carb'd version up to over 12,000' and it ran just fine. I went back and looked at the OP, I'm pretty sure the last year for carb'd versions was 99. Not totally for sure though. An '01 should be FI. Removed the charcoal filter, valve and vacuum line. Had alread installed the fresh air block off plates to prevent backfiring. Run vent tube from under tank down to bottom of bike with other hose and no more problem.I had a 1500 and the clutch retaining spring needed replacement at about 30k miles. Repro Steps: When I turn the key initially it all sounds and looks normal. The FI light comes on solid. The running lights and tail light come on fine. The horn works normally.

Measure the resistance across the 3 white wires going to the stator. Value should be 0.11 - 0.17 ohm (1-ohm scale). Start the bike and measure the voltage on across the same white wires and it should be 54V or more (250v scale).2.
