I have a mossberg rifle from recent production and I am less than impressed. I have both ruger's and savage's, model 77's and model 16's not the axis or american. I would skip the axis and look at the axis 2 vs ruger american. Both guns are pretty light and may have decent recoil with 140 grain 7mm08 loads.
